Shrug and Sigh

No one knows just why
You wear your heart upon your sleeve
Some believe your wish
Is for you to die and men to grieve
A Masochistic urge
Brought on by low self-esteem
You just bite your thumb and say
"To hell with your Psychology!"

We often love to watch you
The spectacle is humorous
And every day we're thankful
Simply 'cause you are not us
With each strangling situation
You fight until the work is done
The gods smile down to grant reward
"Here you go
Another one!"

We don't expect you to survive
Condemned to death while still alive
Too tired to boast
Too proud to cry
Too weak to live
And too strong to die

Shrug and sigh your way through the apocalypse
Pretend your life was just a dream
Joke and smile away the time
While your heart is bleeding
Tell yourself it will not last
This, too, shall pass

We'll take you under new wings
Show you all our brilliant powers
And you can hold opinions
As long as they agree with ours
So claim you can break away
To find the peace and calm outside
But mortal fear's Niagra
Halts your splintered barrel ride

So look at us and at your health
That's all you've got to save yourself
You can't handle the consequence
When a weary smile is your best defense
