i built a city out of buildings
a huge highway from lots of cars
and just as i was getting started
i built a wal-mart on your yards
i made a word right out of letters
and the alphabet from a to z
so when the letters were completed
i'd get some mail from you to me

and it said:

i made an army out of people
and senate chambers from 50 seats
but before the crusades had even started
we had an enemy to defeat
so i grabbed a pen and a piece of paper
(envelopes and stamps well they are implied)
and i fired off my kind of letter
so you wouldn't think that i'd ever lied

and i said:

unless it causes turmoil

unless it's fought on foreign soil

oh soil, we're going to burn it down
and soil, we're going to build them brand new towns
and soil, we're going to buy them brand new shit
and soil, we're just going to turn them capitalist

and if you can't see it
it's already happening today
in every city

so that's how it came to be
that's how i set all those countries free
and paved the way for global democracy
