Brandon Henderson - Absolute Gray
“Excuse me mister, where ya headin’? Could I hitch a ride? I don’t know just where I’m going, I’ll let the road decide” “Fine by me, son. Hop on in and throw your things in the back.”
“All I’ve got is this here guitar case and my old knap sack.”
And the day grows a shade darker With each passing mile marker
“Son, I couldn’t help but notice you’re looking awfully blue.”
“I’ll keep my business to myself, sir. If it’s all the same to you.”
“ Fine by me, son, suit yourself. Just tell me what was her name?”
“ I’ll tell ya, mister, it don’t matter, these girls are all the same.”
And as the boy watches the lights as they go flying by, he thinks of all he’s left behind and he lets out a sigh,
The man says,
“Sit back there, son. It’s alright. Let go of yesterday, your time is far too sweet to squander. Between the black and the white there’s an absolute gray we all wander.”
“ Through the years, son, I’ve seen a million other boys like you. Matter of fact I can recall that I used to be one too. Fed up with life and the girl who gave me one, waving my thumb like a flag. But running from strife won’t rid you of it, son. And boy, ain’t that a drag.”
And the day grows a shade darker
With each passing mile marker
“I hear you, mister. Look I was hoping that you could let me out. You see I’m real tired and there’s some things that I need to think about.”
“ Fine by me, son. I’m sorry if I hit a tender nerve.”
“Don’t worry, mister, I think some closure may be what I deserve.”
And as the man slows to a stop and pulls off to the side , the boy, he shakes the old man’s hand, and thanks him for the ride.
The man says,
“ Remember, son. It’s alright. Let go of yesterday. Your time is far too sweet to squander, Between the black and the white, there’s an absolute gray we all wander.”
